'Shroomie!

One of our more unusual and more exciting Christmas gifts is starting to come to life!

Take a look:

It's the 'Shroomie, from the Lost Creek Shiitake Mushroom Farm. That's just three days, Jan. 28-30. On the 27th there was just a small bud (pin?). Tomorrow? Who knows, but it looks like time to find some mushroom recipes!

Thanks Magen!

Minimal No More

As you may have heard, Mark Bittman's Minimalist column has reached its end. I understand the reasons, and I'm looking forward to his new projects.

But I'll definitely miss the Minimalist recipes. And the videos! Here's one from the Times' "Best Of" list:

The guy doing the filming picked another, but I can't get it to embed, so here's a link.

Wondering when's he's shown up on here? Try this search.

Anyway, I'm getting hungry. See you soon.

Rain, Forest

Yancy and Waterfall 1
Fall, summer, and now winter: just one season to go and we'll have seen the Olympic Peninsula in all it's beautiful variety.

Amazing waterfalls around Lake Quinault this time of year:
Yancy and Waterfall 2
See me up on that bridge? Maybe try the larger version.

Rained pretty much all the time, even on Hurricane Ridge, way over on the other side of the park.

Still some pretty good snowshoeing, though:

And is this really the World's Largest Western Red Cedar?
Emily and Big Cedar
Definitely big, that's for sure.

May have seen better days...

Still a nice little hike on the north side of Lake Quinault.

Finally, here's one of those photos that could just never capture the thing itself, but makes for a nice reminder nevertheless:

Which reminds me: thanks for reading! Have a great weekend!

IDK

As you may recall, I really do like the new library at SU.

Now, however, they've put it onto our new ID cards:
New SU ID

Which is fine, I suppose, but I think I'm still partial to the old one...
Old SU ID

I mean, the library is nice, but it's no Chapel of St. Ignatius.

What do you think, reader?

(And yes, okay, fine, I do sometimes act like I have too much time on my hands, and I should probably get back to grading...)

Alive in Portland

Here's a lighter bit of video: the first episode of Portlandia.

I'm not saying you should watch the entire episode on my blog, but you should definitely at least check out the first few minutes. Hilarious.

Our Children's Expectations

Words can't make things right, but these words certainly help.

Text of the speech.

As David Remnick put it, a speech that ought to "remind a lot of people why they voted for him."

I'm Sad

Seems like a time for saying less. Yesterday's moment of silence:

Obama's remarks from the day of the tragedy are worth a look.

If you haven't seen it yet, it's also worth watching the interview with Rep. Giffords herself from last year, in which she discusses violent rhetoric in politics.

Paul Krugman make a nice point in arguing that lack of "civility" is not the problem: "Politeness may be a virtue, but there’s a big difference between bad manners and calls, explicit or implicit, for violence; insults aren’t the same as incitement."

He's probably right about a lot of that, and he's probably right to worry for our future. I certainly feel worried right now.

George Packer made a similar case on the New Yorker site; now he's responding to commenters who disagree with him.

And thankfully Gail Collins addresses the other major issue--guys like this should not have access to semiautomatic weapons.

If you're in the Seattle area, there's a vigil Thursday evening at Westlake.

Mind and Other Matters

In anticipation of the CD that my new penpal is sending, I was looking at the Bows & Sparrows blog the other day, and I couldn't believe this photo, originally from the CB2 website:

Bound copies of a philosophy journal as book props? I've heard some interesting stuff about books as art objects recently, but this, I thought, breaks all the rules.

Anyway, more fun with the photo: look at those copies of Mind again (click the photo to see the larger version at Bows & Sparrows). Who bound those journals? Unless my eyes deceive, it was the library at my alma mater, Lake Forest College. Not bad; not bad at all.

So, I studied philosophy at LFC (though I'm not sure I ever cracked the pages of Mind while I was there...); here I am more recently, on the way to teach a few philosophy classes:

And...
Bonus Christmas photo!

Glad to see that Gandalf likes the tree!

Hope 2011 is a blast so far, reader!

Just in Case

As you may know, we recently gained a beautiful blue bookcase:

Just look at all those books it holds!

Want your own? We found it at IKEA.

Be sure to secure it to the wall, though. Look what could happen if you don't!

In other news, school's back in session, so I should run. Maybe we can talk more in a day or two?

Cheers!
